Warranty

1 YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY - KALAWOOD INDUSTRIES LTD.

Kalawood Industries Ltd. warrants, to the original purchaser of materials, stairs, and railings, that the product shall be free from defects in material and workmanship including milling, assembly, dimension, and grading. The warranty period shall commence on the date of delivery. Should the product fail to conform to this warranty within the warranty period, Kalawood Industries will, at its option, (i) repair the product, (ii) replace the product in its original state of purchase, or (iii) refund the price originally paid to Kalawood Industries for the product. Please note that:

  • Colour variation in wood is a natural occurrence due to species, age, character, region of origin, UV exposure, etc. For these reasons new and/or replacement products may not match samples or existing wood products. Colour variation in finish/stain due to wood variation is not considered a defect.

  • Due to colour variation of product and/or samples, Kalawood Industries is not responsible for the consumer matching stairs/railings to other wood products such as cabinets, floors, trim, etc.

  • Natural occurrences in wood characteristics such as variations in grain, colour, mineral streaks, knots, and minor checking are not considered to be defects.

  • Normal exposure to sunlight will bring about changes in shading of any hardwood as it ages. Floor coverings, rugs, or furniture which blocks sunlight may give the appearance of discoloration over time. This is not a defect.

  • Damage due to water and/or excessive moisture including but not limited to damage resulting from broken pipes, wet mopping, industrial or abrasive cleaners, seasonal weather conditions, or natural disasters is excluded from the warranty.

  • This warranty covers the cost of the replacements of the products, but will not cover the cost of removal or installation.

Hardwood will continue to expand and contract through heating and non-heating seasons. More importantly, your interior environmental controls which continually provide stable temperature and relative humidity has a greater impact than seasons. Kalawood Industries does not warrant against the expansion and contraction of product or damage caused by low or excessive humidity. Please note it is the customers responsibility to ensure that adequate humidity levels are maintained in the home/location and that the wood is given adequate time to acclimate before installation or it will void the warranty. Failure to install the product in a timely manner will void the warranty. While Kalawood Industries recommends humidity levels be kept between 35% and 50%, stable humidity levels are more important than which humidity level is chosen. Humidity levels below 30% will likely result in hardwood failure. Never install hardwood products while wet trades are present on site or when large humidity changes may occur.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:

  1. Damage caused by misuse or neglect of the product and/or stain and/or paint applied to the stairs and railings by others including but not limited to

  2. scratches, indentations, stains etc caused by negligence, scratches from furniture, appliances, or other abrasives, damage from pets or water dishes, spiked shoes etc including

  3. damage caused by trades and/or professionals during the course of any work in the immediate vicinity (it is always the customers responsibility to protect already installed products).

  4. Poor workmanship by installer not contracted through Kalawood Industries.

  5. Degradation of finishes after acceptance at time of installation. Although we use the highest quality finishes available, performance of said finish is a direct reflection of maintenance and, therefore, not under our control.

  6. Minor separations in product due to expansion and contraction of wood during seasonal changes

  7. Any attempt to repair, replace, or refinish prior to inspection by Kalawood Industries.

  8. Costs incurred as a result of delays or scheduling conflicts.

  9. Products not manufactured by Kalawood Industries that are supplied by Kalawood Industries whose own manufacturer warranty has expired or does not deem their warranty to apply.

  10. Improper storage of wood products after delivery. It is the responsibility of the customer to store all wood products in a climate controlled environment immediately upon receipt. Do not lay hardwood products directly on concrete floors.

Formal acceptance of this warranty is not required. By accepting delivery of the product, the customer is also accepting the terms and conditions of the Kalawood Industries Ltd. warranty. Kalawood Industries reserves the right to amend this policy at any time. Warranty claims must be submitted within 30 days of discovery of the believed issue. Installer/Owner Responsibility

Hardwood is a natural product and may therefore contain features that may not be considered perfect by all people.

  • The installer/owner assumes all responsibility for final inspection as to grade and manufacture. This inspection must be done before installation. Carefully examine hardwood products for colour, finish, and quality before installing. If the product is in question do not install, cut, or otherwise modify the product.

  • Prior to installation, the installer/owner must determine that the job-site environment is adequate for the installation of the hardwood components. Recommendations of the construction and materials industries as well as local codes must be followed. Kalawood Industries is not responsible for damage caused by excessively humid conditions or lack of job-site readiness.

  • Use of plugs, stain, filler, or putty for touch-up during installation should be accepted as normal procedure.

CARE AND USE GUIDE - KALAWOOD INDUSTRIES LTD. SOLID WOOD EXTERIOR DOORS

A. Door Handling and Storage

  1. Doors should be handled with clean gloves or hands to prevent leaving dirt and oil stains on the faces of the door.

  2. Do not drag or slide doors along any surface that could damage the door. Do not drag or slide doors across each other. Do not leave objects or items sitting on the faces of the doors.

  3. Doors must be stored in a dry, ventilated area in an enclosed building. Never store doors outside.

  4. Doors should be stored flat on a level surface. When stacking doors, place a 2x4 at the top and bottom of each door, 12" from the edge. Place a third 2x4 in the middle for a center support. Cover doors to keep clean, but ensure proper air circulation exists.

  5. Never lean doors against a wall, as they will bow over time.

  6. Never store doors in direct sunlight, as the wood will begin to weather.

  7. If doors are to be stored for longer than one week, all six sides of the doors must be sealed with a non-water based sealer or primer to prevent excessive moisture penetration or drying.

  8. Foundations, concrete floors, and plaster or textured walls must be completely dry before the delivery or installation of doors to prevent the intake of excessive moisture.

  9. Avoid placing or storing a door close to a heat source (minimum 4 feet away). Excessive heat directed on one part of the door may dry out that particular area, resulting in warping, twisting, shrinkage, and checking in that area.

B. Door Fitting and Hanging

  1. Give doors sufficient time to acclimate to the humidity of the surrounding area before hanging. In areas of extreme humidity, allow for a minimum of 72 hours.

  2. Adjust or align components if necessary before finishing. Wood panels "float" and may be knocked into alignment with a wood block and hammer. Be careful not to damage the door.

  3. When hanging a door, allow clearance for swelling of the door or frame in highly variable environmental conditions. Adequate clearance ranges 1/8" to 3/16” in width and height.

  4. If trimming is needed, trim no more than 1" at the bottom of the door and 1/8" at each side. Do not trim the top of the door.

  5. Sill height should be a minimum of 4” above landing to prevent snow buildup or rainwater from causing rot.

C. Adequate Overhang

  1. An adequate overhang will help minimize damage
caused by exposure to the elements. Adequate
overhang length is a minimum extension of one-half
the distance from the bottom of the door to the
bottom of where the overhang begins, and at least
one and a half times the width of the door.

  2. If you are unable to achieve an adequate overhang,
please consult your Kalawood Industries representative. We
offer limited warranties for doors without overhangs
    that meet specific requirements.

D. Door Finishing

  1. Avoid use of dark stains or dark paint in areas exposed to direct sunlight.

  2. Prior to finishing, sand all surfaces of the door using the appropriate grit sandpaper. Sand the door following the direction of the grain. Ensure that all marks, fingerprints, and scratches are removed. Do not oversand the door or use grits higher than 180 if you are applying a spray on finish.

  3. Carefully seal all edges including the top and bottom of the door and areas routed for hardware.

  4. On doors that are glazed with glass and are to be painted, the finish used should be flowed from the wood slightly onto the glass. This will provide assurance against water leakage and protect the glazing compound from drying out. Lap paint 1/16" to protect against moisture penetration. NOTE: It is the finisher's responsibility to protect glass prior to and during finishing.

  5. On doors that are to be stained or sprayed, a small bead of clear silicone around the perimeter of the glass will provide assurance against water leakage.

  6. The tops of all outswing doors must be flashed for weather.

  7. Exterior sealers must contain UV inhibitors to protect the door from sunlight.

  8. Kalawood Industries is not responsible for unsatisfactory results of applied finish. Carefully follow instructions from the manufacturer of the finish. Kalawood Industries recommends Odie’s Oil for all your exterior finishing needs.

E. Finish Maintenance

  1. Exterior sealers will weaken over time due to exposure and will require annual maintenance. Inspect the door at least once per year and refinish as necessary.

  2. Signs that your door requires finish restoration include dryness, raised grain, minor surface checks, dark streaks, or a whitish cast.

  3. Please contact the finish manufacturer if you have any questions/concerns about finish maintenance that is not supplied by Kalawood Industries.
